My fish are dying! HELP!!
First it started with my tiny school of three barbs. They just died, no warning. Then I noticed that my chichlid wasn't eating, was extremely larthargic, was hiding in my pecasomous's house, wasnt being mean, and then he was belly up. And yesterday out of no where my pecasomous died. Im so sad and so lost!
My temp is 77, hasnt changed!
I have the strip testers that just show a color, and everything is of normal/safe color!
Four weeks ago I changed my fish from a 15 gallon to a 29 gallon and at this time i added my little school, and my chichlid.
When switching tanks, i added a piece of drift wood (boiled it for an hour, let it cool then added it)
I also added four bundles of live plants, (they're doing just fine!)
The original fish had no light on theyre previous tank, and the new tank has a light
I just cycled the water last night after all the deaths, about 25%
Also the fish seem to have tiny bubbles on them, with a slight film. When the pecasomous died it looked like he had cataracts, and spiderwebs all over him and hanging off!! his pooper was also bloody and it looked like his tail right around his pooper was bleeding inside!
Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.
Now, we will need some more information. The following chart is taken from our disease section; if you could answer these questions where applicable, it will help. Some of this you have already mentioned, but please repeat it so we have everything together.
1. Size of tank?
2. Water parameters
d. pH, KH and GH?
e. Test kit?
4. FW (fresh water) or BW (brackish)?
5. How long the aquarium has been set up?
6. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?
7. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?
8. a. Any live plants? Fake plants?
b. Sand, gravel, barebottom?
c. Rocks, woods, fancy decors? Any hollow decors?
9. a. Filtration?
10. a. Lighting schedule? What lights are used?
b. Any sunlight exposure? How long?
11. a. Water change schedule?
b. Volume of water changed?
c. Well water, tap water, RO water?
d. Water conditioner used?
e. Frequency of gravel/sand (if any) vacuumed?
How often are they fed?
13. a. Any abnormal signs/symptoms?
b. Appearance of poop?
c. Appearance of gills?
14. a. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis?
b. What meds were used?
15. Aside from water conditioner, was and/or is any product being added to the tank?
As Byron said, we need more information about your tank to effectively help you. To start though, take a sample of you water to a local pet store and have them test it. Tell them your problems, and then come back here. (Do not buy any medications unless you trust the dealer...) Also, are there any other fish in the tank? If so, start doing some water changes. Be careful to wash your hands after you are done cleaning though, whatever this is seems pretty nasty...
I would not suggest involving the store, other than perhaps to test water. I'm fairly certain I know the problem, but I don't like to "guess" so will wait for the answers to those questions.
I'm assuming all fish are dead, so medications are not needed, and I think this was a water issue and not something else anyway. But if you do go to the store, one thing to get is a liquid test kit. I would recommend API Master Combo, it has pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate; these are the tests you initially need, and liquid tests are more accurate and thus more reliable than test strips. Don't waste your money on anything else at this point.
