Fast fish with fiemouths?
Can you keep firemouth cichlid with things like tiger barbs, giant danois, and pictus catfih or will fast fish like those stress the firemouth out. Im also curios about what type of cichlid firemouth can be housed with them.

According to the profile for this fish I would not put it with tiger barbs, or danios. According to the profile it is described as a nervous fish, and the danios and tiger barb would be too active for them. You can read more information about the firemouth in the tropical fish profiles. Either by clicking on the shaded name or at the top of the page second tab from the left is the link that will take you over to the profiles section. Also I would read the profiles on the other fish that you may be thinking of keeping with the firemouth to see what their temperments are like.

"medium barbs, larger characins and peaceful substrate fish. Not suitable with small fish" Thats what the profile said could be kept with them but,I was looking for more opinions

Fast moving fish will be fine with firemouth cichlids. The one I used to have were housed with many things from midas to silver dollars. The fast moving fish act as dither fish. These are fish that stay out in the open and let the cichlid know there is no danger. They are actually a good thing. Firemouth cichlid generally should become a lot more outgoing as they get older. I doubt you will have shy fish as they mature. Mine sure weren't. Although size tank would help.

Hi I have 3 Firemouths, with them are 4 Angels, 7 Congo Tetras, 2 Blue Rams and a Pleco, if this gives you any companion ideas. They all seem to get along fine

I did't think angel fish could go with firemouth cichlids......or rams for that matter. Im curios how long have they been together and how big the tank is ?

ScarlettAngel 09-16-2011 04:09 AM

They all go together fine as they are all South/central American Cichlids. The temperature is kept at about 80 so everybody is happy. I've had the tank for about 4 months it is 180 litres ( about 55 gallons) and they've all been added gradually, but they have all now been together for about 2 months. Actually the only problem I had was adding 2 more Angelfish to the tank which created dominance issues with the 2 already in there.

Oh I guese firemouths must not be as agressive as I thought!

ScarlettAngel 09-16-2011 06:37 AM

I've not had any aggression problems with mine, but I think maybe fish can be a bit like people you can get happy ones and you can get some that are grumpy!

2months is not a long time. Come back in a year and say if it all works out. Firemouth cichlids are not aggressive... for central american cichlids. They can be very nasty though. Of corse there are exceptions and it might work but I can tell you now that 1 will get beat bad with only 3 in the tank. I would add more or stick to one. Firemouth cichlids have bigger mouths and more mass then angelfish. They will more than likely rise to the dominant fish in the tank over time.
