Abused, Hiding, Forgiven ... but will it heal?
Ok here are some photos of the brutal abuse she took after the last egg laying session. Second time he beat her up but this time will it heal?? This occurred over a couple nights when the last set of eggs disappeared. So I added more rocks for her to hide if he tries again. Also the photo pinned to back wall above rocks to act as aggression deferral tool.
He is now being very submissive and coaxing with her... rubbing her .. uh vent area when he can and brushing gently .... and guarding glass between me and her in tank. He is forgiven but will the damage from this last abuse heal and grow back????
Aggressive cichlids can be very hard on each other and unpredictable. If they are getting along leave it be but if you see any abuse remove the female. They can do damage to each other very fast. it only takes one night.
I hope she recovers quickly. You're doing all you can to help her.
But I am wondering since this time the tail was actually bitten so badly it shredded will it grow back or just 'scar over' at the edges? Last time the tail was 'thinned' but not obliterated like this time. I could actually hear the attacks from my bedroom (other side of wall)!!! Couldn't catch her. She hid for a week so I thought maybe she was holding since eggs had not long disappeared. They slept near each other in 'his' corner of the tank and are swimming together this morning.
Per her not eating since the eggs were laid before the abuse this time..... should I continue to feed in small amounts? I put in two dither fish (guppy) and SHE attacked the smallest and ate it. That is all she has eaten. The other they just followed around but did not bother. I removed it after a day. She has taken two bites of food since but they are really not seeming interested in eating. He will at night but with way less interest than before. More intent on 'protecting' her at this point.
