Could I keep African cichlids in my 44 gallon tank?

Are there any African cichlids (besides kribs) that I can keep in my tank? My cousin who is becoming a cichlidaholic Thinks I should go the cichlid route.

Tank dimensions:

L= 36" W= 12" H=24"

Water parameters would help. You can defiantly keep some africans in that size tank. Shell dweller will work and you may be able to keep several pairs depending on the species. Julidochromis, leleupi, and caudpunctus will also work. You could go the Tanganyika community tank route. Or you can keep dwarf mbuna like polit or saulosi in ratios of 1m and several females. There are also lake Victorian fish out there that will work. I am not as familiar with them so I can't give any suggestions.
