hey guys i'm new and have a quick question about setting up my new tank this weekend, i plan to get a 20gallon or 10 i cant tell my buddy is giving me the tank, i think its 20, any way will a pictus catfish be okay in a 20 gallon tank? also what are some other fish that would do good with this fish, any any other info i could get about this fish and some plants to put in with my settup would be awesome! thanks abunch for looking
If you click on the shaded name you can read more about the species in the profile's here on the site.
From a quick glance, (since ive never owned these fish) it says they are predatory and need to be in a group of at least 5. The recommended tank size is 48" which is a 55 gallon.
Id check out some of the other fish profiles on the site, you can click on "tropical fish profiles" at the top of the page on the blue bar. Here you can see some of the requirements various fish need.
The pictus catfish is definitely a no in anything smaller then a 55 gallon. You should look into some live bearers like Mollies and swordtails. And if you want to do a small catfish, I would try a small group (4-6) of cory cats. Let us know what you decide!
well poo i really liked that cat fish our local store told me 29+ gallon for one. i plan to upgrade later on down the road to a 55gallon but at the moment i cant afford one and i dont really want to spend alot of money right now as its been along time since i have had an aquarium and wanna get a smaller one to get back into it and learn some about it, but thank you for the quick replys!
As others have said the pictus catfish will not work for your current setup. A group of corys would work, another choice that would work in a 20 gallon would be a whiptail catfish.
yes i was looking at the whiptail catfish aswell, i'm a big fan of cat fish as i used to have one when i was a kid, and didnt know how to take care of it, i will probably buy the whiptail catfish if my local store has them, i plan to go to a 55 gallon or bigger after christmas
If your local store does not have them in stock, check and see if they can order one in for you. Some stores will do this, some of my local stores will depending on what they are able to get from their suppliers.
Will do i plan to go up there tomorrow, my plans may have changed, the tank my friend is giving me may be to small and might leak, so i might buy the 37 gallon kit that petsmart has for 149$ right now, but we shall see, 37 gallon would be very nice though
Any other fish i might need to ask about while i am there?
For upper level fish with a 20 gallon or 37 gallon you have quite a few options that would be availabe. Do you know what the gh, kh and ph of your water is? You can find out the general hardness and carbon hardness from your local water people, most places have this information availabe online. If you can not find the information online you can always call them. This will help in trying to figure out what other fish you can do. Some fish are more sensitive to water conditions that others. In a 37 gallon you could do a group of tetras, or barbs. Depending on your water you may be able to do livebearers. Knowing the numbers and also what might interest you will help in advising. Also you can check out the profiles section here on the site to see what choices may be available and would work with your water conditions. If you have not come across the profile section yet the link can be found at the top of the page second tab from the left.
i'm not sure how our local water is, i have had one tank before and we had a catfish in a 10 gallon and loch that both got over 14inches haha and we had to get rid of them, so i dont know if that tells you any thing about our water, would using bottle water be a better choice? i'm reading every thing i can about water conditioner, keeping every thing at the right level and its bit over whelming at the moment, i know i want live plants aswell so thats also over whelming haha so thanks for all your help and replys
i'm a really big fan of cat fishes and sharks, i was looking into a red tail shark but doesnt look like i will get one of those cause they seem to be hard to get along with
