Things that should be kept "in hand"
Are there any items that should be kept "in hand"?
For emergencies (fish's health deteriorating)... like a first aid kit for fishes. Or is it ok to mostly just get items if/when needed?
I have a fungus and an ick medication on hand. Ideally, you should have some kind of hospital tank so in some cases, you can treat any affected fish, rather than a main tank - there are exceptions. Even a small 5g or 10g is advisable (I have a 5g on stand by). Likewise, this tank can be used to quarantine any new fish for up to two weeks before introducing to your main tank.
MOST IMPORTANTLY is good tank maintenance so fish remain healthy with strong immune systems to ward of disease. The religious weekly water change of 25%-50% (I do 50% after Byron twisted my arm <g>) using a gravel siphon if you don't have live plants. The WWC is essential in maintaining a healthy environment to remove the 'crud' in the water that filters can't. Service your filter(s) appropriately to ensure they continue to function without excess trapped detritus.
Feed your fish a balanced diet. I mix 4 different brands all together in order to ensure a variation and augment with algae wafers and frozen brine shrimp (a treat following the WWC).
