I was at petco today and was informed that some of the small angelfish they have there, that supposedly only grow to 4 inches, do great living completely alone or in groups of five or more. They also said these fish could do okay alone in a 20 gallon tank. I found this a little hard to believe from what I have read on profiles on this site. Is there ay truth to this or is this just bad information from a pet shop?

Haha very true just double checking I wasn't sure if maybe there was an angel fish I had not heard of. Because any types I've seen grow minimum 6inches.
As the others have said bad information from the petstore. When I was first looking at getting my angels I was told that a 5 gallon tank would be okay for 5 angels  Forturnately I did not take his word for it and did my research. I still started off with a tank that was still too small but quickly was able to find my 50 gallon. It pays to do your research and not take the word of most of the fish store employees. Some of them are knowledgable, but most are not and don't even have experience in keeping what it is that they are selling.
I work in a pet shop in UK and love my job and give the best info I can, im very strict on who I sell larger fish too and I ask a lot of question b4 I allow them to buy the fish, most customers see "small" angels and "small" silver dollar andt dunt understand how big they grow or how fast they can grow .... :):):)

I know it is common, but it's so sad because then customers ends up keeping fish in bad environments without even knowing it. It's just a viscous cycle that results in unhappy fish. I had it happen to me with my current fish that I originally purchased for my 10 gallon tank and now I have at least upgraded to a twenty gallon, but still need a larger in the future for the fish I have.
yes pet stores are highly un informed
but i did read some where that the amount of biological waste in the water will greatly decrease the amour ur angels can grow
they need really clean water
It is frustrating how often the information given in places like that is wrong. I am not sure if it is just about selling fish and product or the people genuinely do not know or what. There is one girl at the Petsmart here that seems to purposely try to make wrong sales. The other day she sold a single oto to a woman and when I casually said they like to be in groups, she said "THEY DO FINE ON THERE OWN!!!" The most annoying thing is the lady was more then willing to purchase more then one but the salesperson seemed to want to make a point that she was all knowing. I simply told the lady to Google Oto's and she would find out all kinds of helpful info.
When I got my Angels they were about nickle sized, they are now at least 6 inches if not more and it didn't take long to grow up. They are quite social and I would hate to think of them alone in a small tank.
that is soooooo sad. i hate it when fish are sold to the wrong person and they have to live their life unhappy becuase of what the petstore person said.
