white spots on gold fish
Hi all first let me say i am new to fish aquariums,I bought a 5gal starter kit .Now before i bouhgt these fish i asked if the tank was big enough.I have 2 gold fish and2 fan tails. My problem is the two reg golds have white spots all over them.I was told it was ick and was given this stuff that say ick,the pet shop told me this should clear it up,what do you all think?please help.
first off 5 gallons for 4 goldfish will not be big enough for long. actually, not very long at all!
it could be alot of things, including just stress from the water condition to actual ick. I had what looked like ick on my bala sharks, turns out they just got stressed to death by the bad water because the tank was still cycling.
So what your saying is get a bigger tank if i wont more fish.should i keep treating them for ick?
you're going to need a bigger tank eventually even for just those 4! goldfish can get quite large. one once ate my dog. ok i lied, but seriously they do get big! if they are cramped that will lead to stress.
also, if your tank is brand new the bacteria that supports the nitrogen cycle isn't present, meaning your ammonia and nitrite levels can get dangerously high, which will also stress your fish, if it doesn't just kill them :( water changes on a very regular basis will help keep it in check, though :)
at any rate, stress makes fish very susceptible to illness, infections, and disease. get a good test kit and check your water parameters for nitrates, nitrites, and most importantly ammonia. but also check the sticky about ick, because hey! anything is possible! i don't want to rule OUT ick, ill leave that for a more senior member of the forum here (and thats just about everyone :bluelaugh:) but getting a test kit and checking your parameters is going to be vital for the knowledgeable men and women here to help you out more :)
