agressive/ bully platy
i started a tropical tank about 6 months ago, 80 litres.
i got 3 platys, two female one male.
the male for some reason started to constantly chase one of the females to a point she was exhausted and died. he seemed to be okay with the female that was left.
i left it a few weeks and bought another female, all was well at first, then he started with the same kind of thing, chasing her and she passed away two weeks ago.
during this time found fry in the tank so moved them to a smaller 22 l to let them grow, 3 of them are now in the big tank and hes fine with them.
I decided to get two new females, as the exusting female seemed quite depressed, and he was always hiding .
it was fine at first, he was showing off etc, but after a few hours hes chasing the two new females.
i just dont know what to do.
i tried giving him a time out by putting him in a nursing net thing, then putting him back in a few hours later, even changing the tank round, but hes still the same, ive tried this throught the 6 months to no avail.
is the only to get rid of him, would another male help, so he dosent think he owns the tank?
Hi Jennifer, you might try getting more females. Out number him 5 to 1. Another solution might be to replace him. Some fish just have issues. It might be a genetic behavior. It would be suitable in the Amazon river but not in your aquarium. Not all male platies are aggressive. I have a red male and three females. I have never seen an issue with them.

I agree with Fisherofmen, replacing him would be the simplest remedy.
hes such a handsome guy, i dont really want to get rid of him but if he continues i may have to. ill try a few more females, but if all else fails, hes up for sale thanks for the advice
