I don't know much about it but I found this on the forum under Tropical Fish Dieases
Maybe that will help some.
Can't explain what actually happens in the body but it is caused by poor water quality/stress. It is irreversible although the wounds can be healed a little. It is very common in oscars because people tend to keep them in small dirty tanks.
Water quality and diet are the main player's in my view.
These fish are often purchased when small, and as the fish grow's it need's more water volume, and more filtration for they are large ,messy, waste producing fish.
Tank's too small do not allow for dilution of pollutant's between water changes that larger tanks do and fishes are slowly poisoned by their own waste which is produced faster than it can be removed in some tanks with inadequate filtration and that are too small.
Diet for these fish should NOT include feeder fish, many of which are possibly diseased (store bought) or they are rich in Thiaminase, which works to deplete vitamins that fishes need.
Fish should also receive a variety of food's as opposed to one or two type food's to remain healthy just like us.;-)
