Do I need new lighting for my 30 gal tank?

The tank I have is probably around 10 years old. The lighting fixture looks old... Its been working fine but I don't really know if it is fine or not. I just have a normal fluorescent bulb. Its just a fish only tank, do I need anything special? Do I need a whole new hood? I've been reading about lighting on different websites but I'm really confused by all of the information.

Also, I'm really not as dumb as I might sound in this post! :-D

If it's a fish only tank, then nothing more special about the lighting.

High wattage, direct lighting is for reef tanks full of coral. Your fish only need a dim light to feel safe.

yes true but don't they need at least 40 watts to produce the slim coat that protects them. If the bulbs are 10 years old I would change them. I think I read that right 10 years old.
