Identify this cichlid

Hi. I am trying to identify what i think is a cichlid. he was taken in a cruelty case and no one has any idea. Sorry about the photos, didn't realize how hard it is to take a pic of a moving fish. he is about 6-8 inches long. thanks!

He's so pale right now I couldn't begin to guess. He should color up in a few days in a good tank.

oh. he has been there several weeks.. he must be terribly stressed. you should have seen the tank before they cleaned it - you couldn't tell there was a fish in there...

I am wondering if it may be some type of pike cichlid?

Hmm.. well maybe a jack dempsey? Wonder if you could get a hold of a UV light and try seeing what he looks like then.

Are you in the states ? Looks like a rock bass or some sort of native species like a sunfish

The fish you have is a tilapia most likely Tilapia Buttikoferi. VERY aggressive cichlid. They are one of many africans that can hang with large central american cichlids. I have seen them make red devils and jaguar cichlids look soft. They need a big tank and heavy filtration and choose tank mates wisely.
