Following DKRST's lead:
I installed another Aqueon heater in my 60g. Original was 200w, this one is 250w.
This does not prevent an over-run, but if one fails, the tank temperature will be maintained by the other. I've adjusted the 2nd heater for load balancing as close I can get it. The extra 'horsepower' could also come into play if the room temperature was to drop in winter (although perhaps a moot point in my all electric house!).
I like the Aqueon heaters as they are plastic covered aluminum (no glass) for durability and they have the red/green lights to indicate operation.
I'm always paranoid about the over-temp failure!
I'm "all electric" also. My big fear is an ice storm this winter that knocks out the power for several days (not uncommon here). I'm keeping my eye out for a power converter that could run my tank heaters using a car battery.
A big +1 on the Aqueon heaters.
I like my Aqueon heater much better than my Eheim heaters.
I'm not as concerned about an over-run - perhaps because I only ever had it happen once in the dark ages when we setup our aquariums in a high school science class. I think a wayward student of a misspent youth cooked my fish!
Another good idea about the dc to ac inverter, especially since I overwinter a couple of 12v marine batteries in the basement. I did a real quick check and it looks like an appropriate inverter can be had for $35 - $50.
(400w continuous/800w peak). I'm thinking if there was an outage, I'd just drive one heater.
I do have a concern though and that has to do with maintaining the temperature as the room temp drops way down. I guess we'd also need to consider wrapping the tank in blankets or what not to insulate it~
There are so very many inverters to choose from.
Let me know what you find.
I found a 12v to 110ac inverter, 400w continuous/800w peak for $32 on Amazon. What do you think?
Amazon.com: Power Bright PW400-12 Power Inverter 400 Watt 12 Volt DC To 110 Volt AC: Patio, Lawn & Garden
Looks like it would work well! I'm going to put that on my Christmas shopping list also!
