plants ?
I would love to have live plants in my tank but the snail we have eats any plant we have... he is getting big. Is there any plants that may be safe in my tank other than plastic?

plants are wonderful for aquariums and there are sooooooo many things you can do with them. i wouldn't let a snail keep you from aquascaping your tank beautifully. most lfs will but back fish that you purchased there. if your snail has grown since you bought him then they might pay you more than what you bought it for. they might now pay you cash. they might just give you a store credit

Live plants really do add a lot to aquaria.

Never had snails other than nerites and they didn't bother the plants, so I am not real sure about what species you have, but you may try Anubias or Java Fern. I have both and they are easy to keep and have thicker leaves that may hold up better to the snails.

please post a photo of the snail to get an accurate description. Most stalk plants hold up well, bulb and rhizome plants do very well.

Do you know by chance what type of snail you have, or possibly post a picture of it here so someone can help to identify it? Most of the popular snails kept in the aquaria will not actually eat plants, but you might see them grazing off of the diatoms and other things that may be on the plant leaves.

Its a Mystery snail... easy form I guess. It was smaller when we got him but seems to eat and eat and eat. It's 2 inches now and out of the shell even bigger. We watched him eat the leaves right down to the stems.

I will try ferns and thicker plants. The ones we had were smaller leaves. I will get living plants in there! lol

Mystery snails will usually not eat healthy plants. If the plant leaves are starting to die off, or if the snail is not getting enough food then it may start eating your healthy plants. You can always try putting in an algae waffer for the snail, mine love them. I will also sometimes see mine eating flakes off of the top of the water when I feed my betta. Also I would try plants that do not have as soft of leaves, this may help.

My mystery snail is great because he eats all the dead or dying leaves off my plants, but he leaves the healthy ones. He lets me be lazy. :D

You might also try feeding your snail cucumber or zucchini. Mine LOVES it. I like doing this for the snail/otos once a week because my cory's and tetra finish off the pellets before my snail and otos have a chance.

The fish will leave the cucumber or zucchini alone long enough for the snail to get some of it..and boy does he get it. He eats more of it than anyone else in the tank!

If you do do this, you will likely have to use a fork or plant weights to keep the veggie on the bottom of the tank.

I have found that plastic forks work great for keeping veggies down, stick it into the veggie and then stick the fork into the substrate

Thats a great idea, I need to try that. I hate putting my metal forks in there. I have a designated *aquarium fork* now. :)
