Confused and needs help with using TFK
Hey everybody... I recently became able to use the chat feature on TFK but was fairly disappointed when I saw that there was never anybody using it! The reason that I wanted to use it so badly was that it seemed to take forever to get somebody that knows the answer to my problem to look at my thread and give me a reply, but then I'd only know about it when I next looked at my e-mail. I'd like to be able to use chat so that I can ask people directly and quickly about my problems, instead of having to wait a while as they would see it immediately.
The reason I am writing this is that I was looking for any suggestions for a fish keeping site that has a more actively used chat feature?? I will continue to use this site for questions that don't need to be answered ASAP as it usually takes a day or two to get a response, but when I have an issue with my tank or anything in general such as cleaning I would much rather use a quicker chat. Thanks in advance for any sites that are suggested!
The few sites I've found dont use chat either. Most questions I've seen get answered quite quickly unless you ask late at night and then you might have to wait until morning.
Hi Reece, most of the members on this site do not use the chat feature. Every once in awhile you will see somebody there but not often. One of the things to keep in mind is that it is summer right now, and there have been a lot of members that have been away on vacation and such. But overall I have seen that response times on posts have been fairly quick. Depending on the question that you have it may take awhile for someone who has better knowledge of the situation to come on. I know that I myself when trying to help someone out with an issue, that I want to give them the most accurate information that I am able. Still being new to this hobby, I still have a lot that I am learning, and at times I have to verify informtion that I am posting, so that I don't lead someone the wrong way. Sometimes this can take a little bit depending on the type of information that I am trying to find. One of the things that you can always do if you are having a major problem with your tank and waiting for a reply is to search for old posts to see if you can find someone who had a similar experience and see what advice was given there. Also as layden said depending on the time of day in which you make your post can make a difference. I tend to be on here at different odd hours due to working afternoon shifts, usually late mornings and later at night into the early morning hours while I unwind. Also don't forget about the fact of time zone differences ;-)
I had at look at all the threads you started and they were all replied to the same day (except one which was answered the next day), some within 15-30mins of your original post, so I honestly wouldn't class that as "taking forever". :wink2:
If it is something urgent or as you stated "but when I have an issue with my tank or anything in general such as cleaning I would much rather use a quicker chat" and you can't find an answer going through older threads (and most general questions have been answered countless times before at some point) as BarbH suggested, perhaps you could send a PM to one of the members that you might know, who is logged on at the time or include the word "urgent" in the title of the thread.
haha yeah I may have exagerated the whole "taking forever part", I didn't realise that sometimes the email doesn't come through immediately as the post does, which was why I thought it took a day or two as I didn't see some of them until the email as I hadn't thought to check. (In fact I didn't see yours or BarbH's response by email, I just saw in the last post box that it said the title of my thread and it had beaches underneath lol). It's not really that I want to use chat as an ASAP as I said before, it is more that I want to be able to chat quicker with other fish owners... Thanks for helping me out with this! Also I finally figured out how to do a signature!
Hi Reece, yes sadly Chat is not used much. Sometimes I enter the chat room and put the window off to the side and wait to hear someone come in. Put up the volume on your computer so you can hear it. then open a seperate window to do other stuff. you need to keep one window open and signed into TFK, a window for chat, and then a 3rd window/tab to surf the net if you want. Well in my opinion, that is what I do. Then I can just sit in Chat and wait for someone to come in while I do other stuff.
Also you can tell who is online by the little green indicator light in the bottom left corner of a text box. That will tell you who is online. Also when you sign in , check your UserCP and it will show you the responses to your threads/conversations.
We are all over the world, UK, Australia, Polland, British Columbia, I'm in Ontario, so you are definately dealing with time zones of when TFK fits into their daily lives!
It is a shame the chat isn't used more, I have to say that when I was in there the other week with Jakiebabie, she was kind enough to help me with using the features as I had never been in a Chat Room before.... I haven't laughed so hard in ages! I was such a noob :doh!: Thanks again JB.
Oooops I posted a reply and lost it somewhere...
Thanks Beaches, I enjoyed it too but part of the problem was Chat was not responding to setting changes so it can get confusing. Plus we are on two different continents!!
Just keep trying Reece. Stay for a few minutes and maybe someone will come in to chat with you. Good luck, looking forward to talking with you and Beaches.
where abouts are you Reece ?
we have people from all over the world, and sometimes when i'm all snuggly
in bed,the other guys are just getting up for morning coffee
