common pleco life span

how long do common plecos tend to live?

They can be like goldfish in regards to lifespan and if lucky, kept in appropriate conditions/tank size etc. can possibly live 20-30 years (from what i have read), but most never reach that, so in a home aquarium setting it is hard to say for sure.

Yes it varies

I have heard between 10 and thirty years depending on what size tank it is kept in and if you were breeding it a lot. Its hard to tell exactly how old it is because you never know how long it was sitting in the store unless it was born in your tank

i suppose that is a good point, i didn't think about that. i'd have to imagine that the younger you get it from the store the longer it will live, since stores don't tend to be the best places for fish (small tanks, lots of fish, etc). of course, i've also heard that the smaller they are the more likely they are to die of unknown causes.
