Fluval 305?

SOOOO i got one of these pretty cheap!

never used a canister before.

im pretty sure most of the media in this thing is carbon (bad for my plants!) Right?

any suggestions what i should put in the different compartments?

Skip the carbon and hold onto it should you ever need to remove meds. I believe the 305 comes with 3 media trays ... so I would do Biomax, or some other ceramic rings in the top two trays for biological filtration. In the bottom tray I do 100% polyester fill that I bought at Michaels crafts stores. I think poly-fill works just as good as the Fluval polishing pads ... but is much cheaper and one good sized bag will last you months.

It works wonders in collecting the smaller particles the foam pads don't get. Every two weeks I do my maintenance and am amazed at how much debris the poly-fill picks up.

Hope this helps!
