Feeding Black Skirt and Neon Tetras
I have a 55G planted tank with 10 Black Skirt Tetras, 10 Neon Tetras and 1 Siamese Algae Eater.

The problem I have is that when I feed the fish, the Black Skirt Tetras go to the top of the tank and eat all the food. The only way I can get food to the Neon Tetras is to put alot of food in so some floats to the lower part of the tank so the Neons can eat. I'm worried about over feeding and having water quality issues.

Any Suggestions?

you can presoak some of the food so it sinks faster. A syringe or turkey baster might help as well. Also you can put some food on one side of tank for the skirts then put more food on the other side and hopefully it will go down before the skirts get to it.

Hello and welcome to TFK :-D as Layden suggested you can presoak some of the food so that it sinks, I have also found if I take a pinch of food and place it under the surface of the water and then release it, it will sink for the lower level feeders. Also people have had success with the two handed feeding method placing food in opposite ends of the tank.

i had success with BarbH's method when I had the same problem. after a few days, the fish that hang out at the bottom learned to go to the top of the tank to get food. now they go up top whenever they see me pass in front of the tank!

I've had good success putting the flakes in a glass cup and pre-soaking that way. I then pour a small amount and watch that it all gets eaten before pouring in another small amount.

the tetras will get hungry and figure out how to get food

Well, you guys were right, the neons now come up to eat. It's now a feading frenzy when I feed them. Thank you all for the suggestions.
