Whats killing my fish???
Hi I have a 55g established planted tank. My readings are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate anything from 5 - 20, ph 7.6, have had these reading for weeks. The problem is the past 3 days I have lost 4 guppies, 2 harlequin rasboras, 2 neon tetras. I do 20% water change weekly and add prime and stability to my new water. My stock is
4 male guppies, 6 bloodfin tetras, 3 harlequin rasboras, 4 male swordtails, 4 zebra danios, 3 silver tetras, 1 algae sucker and 2 cory cats (sorry can't remember the type).
Any help would be great, the fish all appear healthy but before dying they hang around the back of the tank looking lethargic, oxygen shouldn't be a problem because I have an air curtain which is on 12 hours with the lights.
Not sure what other information you need but would appreciate any help; this situation is extremely distressing as I am not sure what has caused these sudden deaths
How often are the waterchanges?
Fish deaths can also skyrocket easily.. Fish get stressed, release hormones, fish pick up on these and release hormones of their own, and it stacks...
Air curtains move a lot of water around, and you have forest fish that prefer slow-moving water. I would assume that too.
Thanks for reply, I do 20% water changes weekly. Which of my fish like the slow-moving water? I didn't think that would kill my fish, I should maybe only have it on for a couple of hours a day, do you think that would help?
A sudden death of so many fish has to be caused by something. How long has the tank been running? What is your filter? Are any substances other than Prime and Stability going in the tank? You say nitrates are anything from 5-20, do you mean they vary from 5 one time to 20 another? Which test kit?
How long have you had these fish (please be specific so we can access)? Planted, so how many and what plants? A photo fo the tank would help here and save time.
And have you tested your tap water for pH, hardness (find this out from the water supply folks), ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?
Quick response on the air curtain, you probably don't need it, but let's get the death issue solved first.
