Discus and Corys
Can discus go in a tank with corys?
At a LFS the person working there said they could not go together.
Hi, I don't know much about cories, but I do have 6 discus. Discus like soft, warm water ~84f, and they are not fond of fast moving fish. I know cories school, etc., but I don't know if they are considered fast or not. If discus are mixed with "dither" fish, they become skittish and shy. Other than that, I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Leave it to the cory fans to shed some more light.
Discus are fine with angelfish, apistos, cories, rams, ancistrus plecs and tetras. Please make sure the corydoras you get are quite tolerant of the warm temperature. I've mixed peppered cories with discus before at a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit. I am sure Sterbai cories should be tolerant enough.
If you intend to keep tetras, cardinals and rummy-nose tetras are about the best choices.
I am also thinking of getting 10ish Leucomelas Cories (if I can ever find them) to add to my discus tank. But I read somewhere that cories can carry parasites that can harm the discus. Anyone know anything about this? The very last thing I want to do is hurt my babies!
I have never heard of cories carrying a parasite that can harm them but having never kept discus it's not something I've really looked into.
I have seen cories being kept with discus in quite a few display tanks in lfs's and they seem to get along fine. Other than the temperature, and this possible parasite, I don't see any problem mixing them as cories are very peaceful and although quite active, aren't boistrous at all.
Ok, thanks for the info. I've been looking for Leucomelas everywhere and I just read that and it through me off!
