Where Can I Get REALLY BLACK Gravel?
I'm starting a 20 gl tank for my cats and they really like neon tetras, so that's what I'm doing but the black gravel at Wal-Mart isn't black AT ALL(Aqua Culture) it's brown and looks like crap with the day-glow bits of pink and blue gravel mixed in - like turds flecked with Skittles - trust me, NOT the effect I was after, at all! It looks even WORSE under the blacklight, disco ball and strobe lights! Don't ask! Now I have 15 lbs of gravel to toss after I pick out the day-glow bits of pink and blue!!!
What brand makes TRULY BLACK aquarium gravel? Thanks!
Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.
You can buy black fine gravel and sand online, some stores may carry the various products. CarribSea make some [here's a link: CaribSea Super Naturals | Moonlight Sand | Tahitian Moon | Torpedo Beach | Rio Grand | Amazon | Ramblin Rose | Kon Tiki | Zebra | Peace River ], there are likely others.
An inexpensive alternative is playsand from Home Depot or Lowe's. I have it in 3 tanks, and the catfish and loaches like it.:-) It is not "black" but a natural tan/gray like an Amazonian stream.
If not in your local fish store then try searching online...
Petco has their own brand of black sand. It isn't really sand as much as it is very small gravel. It's pretty black. Here is a pic in my tank...
Try other pet stores before paying shipping online. My LFS has black gravel and sand.
Eco-Complete is really black in color :)
I hear you on that brand...Mine turned a funky grey color. Bagh!

No...it seems pretty smooth.
1, pet supplies plus (and probably petcos and such too) carry a black tiny gravel.. It's called 'Estes Reef Sand', but it's totally inert, and safe for freshwater.
2, Call around to pool supply/installation companies and look for "3M Colorquartz" S-grade is smaller, but both are pretty small. It requires a lot of washing in hot water, but only to get rid of the dust. It too, is totally safe and inert. (I have a suspicion that Estes actually washes and repackages the colorquartz and sells it as reef sand..)
For a pic, click on the 'Soil Substrate Part 2' and scroll down. I used the estes reef sand. There's also a pic of the package.
Welcome to TFK :) All good suggestions from above. I would check the local pet and fish stores and see what they have available. The black gravel that they sell that I have seen at petsmart is pretty much the same price as the gravel that is at wal mart. With the cats, if it is corys you just want to make sure that the gravel does not have sharp edges. Good luck and when you get things set up we would love to see pictures.
