Hi guys this is my first post.
Im the prowd owner of a 70 gallon aquarium and 3 common goldfish (about 4inch in size right now). I have 2 ex1200 filters so i got that covered!
My tank is at 23degrees right now, levels all settled.
I'm asking for opinions on common plecos. I would absolutely love one of these catfish, always wanted one. But im wondering how safe my goldfish are. I know all the stories that plecos CAN suck on the slime coat etc but surely thats more likey on fancy goldfish? My common's are fast as hell!
I guess you could go on for years and they never bother each other but then again they could.
I just really really want a pleco in there, i just dont have anymore room in my flat for another aquarium so thats out of the question. When it gets too large i would be willing to sell it and buy another small one - i'm in it for the sheer enjoyment!
Thanx in advance
Well a common could work but it will get rather large. Why not somethng like a couple Bristle nose blecos Or Bull Plecos or one of the other smaller species?
When you do get a pleco or two, make sure to keep up with your gravel vacs as they waste produced will double.
hi. thanx for replying. I love the thought of it getting rather large, ill just sell it to a friend or something when it gets like over a foot or something. Thing is other forums keep telling me a common plec will attack my fast common goldfish etc?
And that a bristlenose is much less likely to? Mind you by the time the plec is huge the goldfish will be massive too...
Im confused! i want a plec badly
A BN pleco can get up to 7 inches so they are not that small when full grown.
As for attacking your goldfish, it is really hit and miss. The only reason i have heard that plecos "attack" goldfish and eat their slime coating is because they are not getting enough veggies. If you feed them enugh cucumber, zucchini and other green weggies they should leave the goldifsh alone. Also, a cave that the pleco can hide in is a good way to help them be less aggressive.
The thinkgs you will see with yur goldfish is as they get larger they will get slow. Especially at ngiht when they are "sleeping" is when the most common times for the plecos to suck on the slime coat.
Thanx. So a BN would be a more sensible option then do you think?
Thing is i really want a plec at least 10 inch when its an adult.
If you want a pleco but not a common or bristlenose then I would opt for a rubberlip as they can handle the cooler water temperatures. They also make a good tank mate and I don't think one would harass the gold fish.
