trapped kribensis

I have a clay pot cave with a 1" hole for entry/exit. My kribs have been piling gravel in front of the hole and have created such a ramp that I'm worried the female can't get out. Is there any chance of that? Usually she wiggles free to feed, but not today.

Kribs are excellent builders/diggers, i wouldnt worry about it. They are trying to create a pit so they can spawn. The chances are they will already be digging a 2nd exit maybe at the back under the pot.

and if she didn't come out today, you most likely have eggs. If they are healthy then they could go about a week with out food

I want pictures of this stack they are building, sounds interesting! Congrats on the spawning if it happens.

Here she is exiting. They must have knocked down a few stones since this morning. It's hard to photograph the ramp, but you can see most of the hold is blocked.

yeah you probably have eggs, does she look skinnier

not that I can tell

there is this strange thing about my female. She looked like a normal Krib in the LFS, but she got really stressed out on the ride home, so much that she turned almost completely dark colored and the middle of her body has remained a dark purple ever since. It's been a couple or three months. I imagine that is what she should look like when mating, and I have not seen any substantial color changes.

do you happen to know the latin name

stevenjohn21 08-09-2011 01:39 PM

If there are eggs inside the pot it is unlikely that they will hatch as Kribs (and all cichlids) get spawning wrong the 1st few times. If i were you i would turn the pot on its side and look to see if there are eggs in there. If there are then you will have more luck rescuing them in a breeders net and an airstone. I would then take the pot out and make a slightly bigger hole for peace of mind. 2-3 weeks later she will spawning again !

What are you feeding your kribs ? They will change color in a split moment if they are not happy they will go a dark gray color. Whenever im taking a picture of mine i will feed them brine shrimp to boost the colors !
