I have seen this before and the reason was, on that occasion that the ammonia in the water had crept up and was effectively burning the fish. Can you give any more details regarding the type of set up and the species of the cichlid?
Either way test immediately for ammonia (NH3/NH4) and nitrite (NO2) as well. With any ailments this should eb your starting place.

It looks to be the normal coloration of the fish to me. Blood parrots come in an array of patterns sometimes. Please do not tell me this fish is in a fish bowl.
