out of control snails
Well, I finally got brave and added live plants to my 20 gallon aquarium. I put in two swords and a few plants that float on the top and look like mini cabbages, I don't remember what they were called.

Anyways, a long with the plants came snails and now two weeks later I have an out of control snail population. I'm in the processing of moving all the fish in my tank (a bunch of hybrid live bearer fry ranging in size and 1 old, old male dalmation molly) into a new tank. The LFS said I could put a goldfish in the 20 gallon and he would eat snails. Is this a good idea? They also suggested using lettuce and pulling them out that way.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, my plan for the 20 is the make a tetra tank once the fry are moved and snails are gone.

Wrong idea to use a goldfish for controlling the snails. A 20 gallons is too small for one goldfish. Cut down on feeding as abundant food supply is often the main cause for population boom among the snails. Remove manually any snails you see or use lettuce to bait them out of your tank.

Thanks. I was actually gone for the last week so I think the snails were drawn to the vacation feeder. Well, I wouldn't keep a goldfish long. my friend has a pond, so it would only be around to cut down the population some. It seemed like the easy way to go...I guess I'll try the lettuce thing, I just really didn't want to do that.

how did you get on with getting rid of the snails ?

Once you get the fry out of there, a 20 gallon (particularly a 20 gallon long) is big enough for a trio of Botia striata (my favorite snail control prescription). Kuhli Loaches would work as well, but you should get at least 6 of those. A single Banjo catfish could work as well (but might get too big), or just turn it into a Dwarf Puffer Tank. Note that all but the last need a soft bottom, the kuhlis and the banjo especially.
