I have one of these filter's and they work well for tanks up to around 40 gallons in my opinion.
I fill the media basket with biological media (noodles) rather than the carbon that is suggested or if I wish to clean the water in a tank, I will use the carbon.
Only thing I don't care for are the numerous part's (seals, gasket's) that must be placed in the right posistion for the filter to run right. this sometimes get's frustrating after dis-assembling the filter to clean the impeller.
My sister uses one on 46 or 50 gallon goldfish tank and only cleans the filter or changes out carbon, perhaps once a year:roll:.
I personally like the Eheim 2217 for tanks up to 80 gallons and moderate fish loads.
