Just had some cichlids given to me, what is their basic nessecities?

I was just given some convict cichlids and i have never dealt with any other type of fish except for bettas so i am wondering what they need, eat, and any other type of information i need to know about these little guys.
All advice will be greatly appreciated:-D

Buy more than one there's a chance of getting a pair. Convicts breed extremely easily and will overpopulate a tank with babies. They are also nasty when defending a brood and will defend their fry from fish many times their size. A singe specimen is also fairly aggressive and should be kept with either other similarly aggressive cichlids or fast upper water fish like danios. Besides that they are super easy to take care of. Give them good food and clean water and they will thrive. What size tank are they in? What fish are with them and how many do you have?

i have 6 and the tank is a filtered, heated 20 gal. I have only had bettas so these are a new experience for me.

You will most likely get a pair. Get ready they breed a lot and once a pair forms they will probably kill the other fish in the tank. Provide plenty of cover in the form of caves and what not. Convicts are fun to breed but getting rid of fry can be hard. You may very well end up culling most of them.

I just recently spawned my dragonscaled bettas, so i really cant deal with cichlid fry right now and i think these were someone's unwanted babies too because it was the petstore that just handed them over lol.

Well then I would just keep one. A single specimen can make a great wetpet.

What can i put with the one? I was able to find home for the others.

With one you may be able to add fast moving fish such as zebra danios or tetras such as serpae or black skirts.
