Hello ALL!!! ive been gone for some time now! whats new with everyone? :D My tanks have been doing awesome.
However... i have a tank with a red crypt and a bronze crypt that were growing amazingly! growing many many leaves and with beaitufil colors! but... the crypts have been losing more leaves then growing and it seems that whenever a new leaf comes,it dies shortly after. Its 2 watts per gallon and mainly high light plants like red wallachii and red ludwigia (mainly red plants).
why this deaths in my crypts?
Water Parameters? Are you using CO2 or Excel?
No Co2 injection or excel. its a 10 gallon tank. I have MANY cherry shrimps and malaysian trumpet snails in the tank along with 3 guppies. THeir existence will suffice in the Co2 area.
nitrate less that .2
i does with flourish comprehensive twice a week
I take it we are not talking crypt melt, but just a leaf here and there?
Whichever, think about any changes about the time this started. Light (are the bulbs due for replacement, or were they replaced), water changes (more or less water being changed, something in the tap water now that wasn't before), fertilizer, temperature change, other plants added. What is the substrate?
A photo of the tank might help. Then we can see all the plants together.
Welcome back from your hiatus.:-)
THanks :D well ive had this tank for 2 years or so and have not changed the bulbs once. THe tank is heavily planted. I will post a pic in a min. I dont know if it is crypt melt. As a matter of fact, when i first got the crypts, i never saw crypt melt. I used to have MANY leaves on a single crypt but now its like 10 or so leaves...and yellowing. ALl the other red plants are doing very well and exploding.
the tank is usually 80 degrees F and the substrate black flourite fine sand. Leaves come and go....but ive never had such a huge crypt die off before. I also noticed the leaves on the crypts are getting smaller.
ok so heres what i have in the tank....
the far left stem plant is red ludwigia
the plant on the right side of it is rotala rotundafolia
the plant next to that is unknown
the plant on the far right is red wallichii
that hideous green blob near the right side of the middle is actually a huge blob of bladderwort!!! growing out of control lol havent had the heart to get rid of it
the plant behind it (hidden) is the red crypt and the left of that is the bronze crypt (you notice the yellowing leaves)
the plant on the front, left side is what i think is red tiger lotus. FOr some reason it stays that low to the ground! im thinking about buying more to make it as a carpet!
i also have microsword random scattered about aswell as some failed ungrowing glossostigma
That photo tells a lot. The plants look super, so this is solely a crypt problem. Maybe it is in competition with some other plant, thinking here of alleopathy.
The tubes are probably due for replacement, but the plant growth is still good, so up to you. Trouble is, as tubes fail (which can be quite suddenly) algae will increase and plants will falter. I have foound my T8 tubes tend to start weakening after 12-18 months, so I replace them no later than 18 months.
I can't see the crypts well enough, but it does not sound like the melt; that is when all the leaves within a couple days disintegrate into mush. What you have sounds like what I had a couple years back in one tank. Eventually the crypts got so bad I just tossed them. I don't have especially good luck with crypts.
Thanks for the tips :D
i have absolutely no algae in the tank! i dont no why...maybe the snails do the job?
well take that back, every once in awhile i will get a green spot every month or so on the glass walls. I guess i should try replacing the bulbs. Its weird though because the crypts looked AMAZING a few months ago!
should i add anything to the tank? any ideas on the bladderwort? :/
My crypts have recently begun to melt too, i suspect the high heat that I've been getting here. Not sure where you are, but have your temps changed?
actually yes. The temperature is typically about 80 degrees F... but being in texas weather, it is about....84-85.
