How Long to seed a filter
Last week Friday I placed a small sponge filter into my main tank so that I would be able to seed it and move it over to a 10 gallon that I have set up for raising fry. In the 10 gallon I already have a diy sponge filter set up that has been running in there for over a month, and the 10 gallon has been cycled. I want to move the filter that I seeded over to the 10 gallon, how long should I wait before moving it to allow the bacteria to establish itself in the new filter?
Could just move a small cutting from the main tank's filter to the 10 gallon.
It would take perhaps weeks for a new sponge filter in an established tank to develop a new colony of bacteria...if it would even happen. Remember that the population of a beneficial bacteria colony is in proportion to the bio-load and other tank conditions.
I think what I might do is install the new sponge filter in the new tank, then 'clean' the old sponge [filter] in the new tank. Squeezing the established sponge in the new tank water will release sufficient bacteria to seed the tank which will inhabit the substrate, decor and new sponge filter.
