Anyone live near a lake? I'm looking for some little invertebrates to colonise a paludarium I'm building... I'm looking for- springtails- look like fleas.. They like moist soil, and jump like mad. They don't bite though. http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardand...gtails-ygl.JPG freshwater sponges- related to marine sponges.. They look like brown algae, but aren't 'soft', and retain their shape. They die if exposed to air, so these would have to be put in a container underwater. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/es/science/cit...es/sponge1.jpghttp://photos.hi5.com/0000/822/415/LCWKRS822415-02.jpg water striders/water treaders- they can bite, so be careful. http://tolweb.org/tree/ToLimages/Hyd...-stagnorum.jpg freshwater jellyfish- Yep. They can't hurt humans. Water louse- Like pill bugs, only aquatic. Also, scary looking. Daphnia- white specks swimming in the water. Hydra- Sure, why not. They look like anemones. Freshwater Limpets http://www.eeob.iastate.edu/faculty/...cs/limpet2.jpg Might as well throw in a handful of detritus from the bottom too. I can plant my plants in it. |
I am surronded by lakes...the great lakes. I am going to Lake Huron on Thursday. Not to sure what I will find. |
