37 show plants
i have a new 37 show i want a LOT of plants, tall in the back and short in the front. i have flourite substrate my ph will be in the 6.8-7.0 my light will be a 15-20w 10000k flourscent 78-82 temp. what plants can i get and do i need anything else? ps i have a petco and petsmart and three ma and pa stores where do u recommend i buy the plants form? thanks for the help :)
plants won't grow well with the light you have, you need one rated around 6500k
Some easy beginners plants include Wisteria, Amazon Pennyowrt, java fern, anubias, vallisneria, cryptocorynes, amazon sword
Buy them from anywhere they look healthy. Most plants will recover from store conditions when you get them home to good conditions
Yes, I would get a fluorescent full spectrum or "daylight" tube with a Kelvin around 6500K. Measure the tube that fits your fixture, that is what you look for (watts is meaningless). As for plants, many of those mentioned by sik80 are in our profiles, second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the pahge takes you to the fish and plant profiles section.
And welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum. Glad to have you with us.
thanks byron thats what i will get then. also do i need a co2 producer or will my flourite do that?
Enough C02 will be porduced by your fish, so you don't need to add more. In a planted tank there must be a balance between light, nutrients and C02; if one of these is in excess there will be issues such as high algae growth. Additional C02 is only needed if there is high lighting because it then becomes a limiting factor for plant growth
ok thank you very much the plan is after the tank is cycled (no fish only plants) then i will add my fish. the parameters will be
2 dwarf gourami
7 Glowlight tetras
3 Sunburst platys
4 Fancy male guppies
6 ghost shrimp? (not sure if i will get them)
1 moss ball
3-4 tall plants
3-4 short grass-like plants
0-2 Floating plants
i have to check the lfs for plants
i have read all the info on these fish on this site and believe this will be a good community tank. am i correct?
Just to be clear, you do know that you can add a few hardy fish right away as long as you have enough plants in there, right? I would maybe add the Shrimp, or the Platy's first. I am not sure about multiple dwarf Gourami either. I guess as long as you have one of each sex and not 2 males it MIGHT be alright. I just know that in the Blues/Golds/Opaline's they can be quite aggressive with each other.
Oh, just wanted to add that I think the Ghost Shrimp are great. They are quite interesting to watch.
yes i did know that but i dont want to risk losing any fish. ok thanks ill do one gourami then and i have 6 ghosts in my other tank and love them :-D how many do you advise
