Suggestions for stocking my 30g
So I have turned my 30g tank into a freshwater tank, it was a saltwater but we upgraded to a 55. It's been up for about 2 2 1/2 weeks now. Curently I have 3 glowlight tetras, 3 black phantom tetras, and 3 albino corys. I wanted it to have a main school of fish or have 2 smaller schools. I'm just not sure as to how many I would need to create a school or what the limits would be for 30gs. I know I want a few more corys and an albino bn pleco. We have hard well water and pH is 7.2-7.4. Any suggestions as to what I should do will be greatly appreciated :-)
Main thing is to increase the fish you have, the two tetra species. Tetra are characins, and all characins are shoaling fish which means they live in very large groups. This not only serves as security for the fish, but they have interactions among fish in their groups. With the Black Phantom for instance, males will frequently display to each other, and to attract the females. This is part of the enjoyment of keeping these fish, watching how they naturally interact.
Corys are also shoaling fish, so 2 more albinos would be good. Or, if you want two different species, 3 of each species works well. Up to you.
Six is the minimum for most tetra, and with space more is better. In a 30g I would add 4, 5 or 6 more to both the Phantom and Glowlight. You can read more on these fish and others in our profiles, second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the page, or in posts click on the shaded name, example Glowlight Tetra and Black Phantom Tetra. Name will shade if it appears exactly as in the profile, common or scientific name.
A Bristlenose Pleco is possible, if you have lots of wood; they need to browse wood. They are also algae eaters, common green algae, so unless this is present I would not add one of these.
Now, the above additions need to be done slowly to avoid mini-cycles. If you have live plants, this is less of a concern, and plants are highly recommended for these fish, esp the tetra. They will be much more relaxed in a group among thick stands of plants.
