Not the best photo he/she is a busy bee. This cichlid is a Star Sapphire Placidochromis "Phenochilus Tanzania". Hoping for a male as they are beautiful as an adult. Looking for some expert opinoins. Will try to upload a better pic soon.

Sorry man, the only way to tell the sex of this fish at such a small size is to vent him. Here's a link to tell you how if you don't know. Good choice in fish by the way. They grow slow but are absolutely stunning as adults.

Thanks for your advice. Not sure if I will try to vent him/her. I don't want to injure it. They are stunning, fell in love with a 5 inch male in LFS display tank.

I think if you just got him you should defiantly wait because it can be a stressful procedure but once he is comfortable in your tank and puts on some size you should vent him to make sure he is a male.

I will definitely wait a month or so before I consider venting him. He has already starting getting more blue on him so I'm hoping that is a good sign.

Male or Female Answer!

Finally decided to vent him and I am very happy to report that he is in fact a male. He is growing fairly steadily too and had a nice blue shimmer when I took him out of the water. :-D

Good to hear. These guys looks stunning as adults. Don't give up on him and you will be rewarded with a stunning fish.
