- - Bichir question...

I was thinking of getting a bunch of feeder guppies and putting them in my 75G with my bichir. Any thoughts on that? Would like to see what he would do with a dozen guppies, lol.
Will QT them in a 10G for 3 weeks first to make sure no ick, as the LFS here is notorious for ick. Almost everytime I get fish there, I get ick. I get fish at other places like Petco, and no ick.

I don't see a problem with that, Lone.;) You seem to have planned everything right.:)

I'm also getting a free Rainbow Cichlid next weekend. Well, maybe not free. I have to drive 3 hours to get it, lol. Also getting a free dojo loach as well with it, lol. But that might go to another friend if they are interested still. If not, I'll keep it.

the only problem I see, apart from my own morals, is the poor protein content of guppies.
feeder guppiues as an occasional treat would be ok but as a full time diet could lead to health problems in the future.

That would be so if the guppies were starving. But if well fed right before feeding the bichir, then they would get a decent meal. And that wouldn't be the whole meal either, he'll still get his sinking carnivore pellets as well and shrimp pellets, as well as pieces of frozen shrimp.

Is just like feeding praying mantis or lizards, if you feed the food with high quality food then their nutrition value is better. I has seen where a lot of breeders of lizards are going away from using calcium powder and feeding the "food" with high value calcium food because the suppliments were causing serious defects.
Shouldn't be a problem at all. If you get a good m/f ratio then those dozen could last you for some time.
