Convicts + Pleco = Pleco died - question
well - my 55g with a breeding pair of convicts with 50+ fry and 13-16 juveniles had a pleco in it. I found the pleco dead today. I immediately removed him and did a water check -
Ph = 7.8
Ammonia = 0
Nitrites = 0
Nitrates = 10 (or close to)
Temp = 80F
Should I be worried or should I assume that the mom/dad got to him?
He didn't look like he was munched on. Everyone else in the tank looks okay and is acting normal (as far as convicts go I guess).
Every time I have ever seen convicts and plecos kept together the convicts kill the plecos. My cousin used to breed convicts and he went through about 6 plecos of different sizes before giving up. He only used them in his grow out tanks and they still were killed eventually, I'd imagine with mom and dad the process was pretty quick. Convicts can be extremely vicious.
I have heard that is quite common actually. I did have a huge pleco 16 inches long in a tank with Banded Convicts years ago and they were fine but I think the fact that the Pleco was huge when I put the Convicts in the tank is what worked there. They were in there for years without issue but as I said, I heard that often the Cichlids will kill Pleco's. :(
Convict cichlid is an aggressive species, and when any cichlid spawns, it is usually even more so.
