Bichir and knife: what can they eat:
Ok, here is the question and please only base this on personal experience. If oyu have a bichir, knife or any other ancient fish that you feed live fish to or have had eat live fish please list them here. Please list as much as you can remember:
What fish it ate/eats and their size
This is ontended to give those that want these fish something to go on if they want other fish in a tank with them.
Bichirs i own or have owned:
polypterus palmas buettikoferi
polypterus palmas polli
i've grown them from 2" and my biggest so far is 12" The only fish i've lost that wasn't intended to be food was a 4" african tiger fish (hydrocynus vittatus) to my P. ornatipinnis when she was 8".
I don't think you should feed these fish live if you plan on giving them tank mates. I feed mine: chopped prawns, tilapia, squid, krill, red/black/earth/blood worms, silversides, frozen convicts, beefheart and pellets.
Here is a site i found that gives some better detailed information about them all be it not that in depth. It is curious to find out that you can breed them in captivity which would be fun to try if I ever have a huge tank.
Clown Knife is what i had and now i have a black ghost knife. My clown knife i feed ghost shrimp, sinking shrimp pellets, night crwles (after it reached 8 inches) never had probs they just get big so i had to give him away:(

Sorry, I don't know what happened to it.
I have kept green and silver arowanas. Green arowana is fed with shrimps, bloodworms, earthworms, fish(not really advisable as they are difficult to wean on dried foods; my blunder as well) and insects. Silver aros were fed with shrimps, insects, dried foods, earthworms fish and lizards. One died shortly after my father fed it with tadpoles.
Clown knife was bought on impulse without knowing it will soon gobble its tankmates. Also fed with shrimps, earthworms and fishfood but due to improper tank maintenance(the time when I simply do not know much about fishkeeping), it lasted for only about 2 years.
Senegal bichirs. They were fed with shrimps, bloodworms, fish, earthworms and dried foods. I have one right now at 4 inches size and this will marked my comeback to the monster regime. Step aside, tetras! I'm eyeing 3 other species but not until my wallet permits me to do so.
