Aferican Butterfly Fish
Today I purchased a Butterfly fish. Is there anything specail i need to know about them? The petstore owner said that the are pretty hardy fish, and can live about in any water condition. Is this true. If anyone knows anything about these fish, let me know.
No, they can NOT live in about any water condition. Just make sure you have a cycled tank and clean water - but that's with all fish.
The only thing they're overly sensitive to are pH fluctuations (from what I've read). I also purchased one several weeks ago. Check my thread in here, it's only a few posts down, and it has pics.
They're somewhat picky with their foods, I've found. Mine hated bloodworms, doesn't touch flakes or slow-sinking pellets. Sometimes he'll eat freeze-dried shrimp, but he primarily loves eating some nice juicy chunks of mysis shrimp. The other day he attacked it so voraciously he jumped out of the water, and launched the mysis shrimp to the other side of the tank! He didn't even get it, just sent it flying. Eventually he found it though.
They're interesting fish to watch during feeding, they become extremely active. During the day though, they just hang about, with little interest in anything. Try and provide some floating plants, I can see from your pics you have none. It makes your surface dwellers feel much safer, and they'll really appreciate a place to hide. If you want, I can walk you through some steps if you have some plastic plants lying around. You can't just toss them and let them float, the current will constantly drift it about and send it throughout your tank. Trust me, wherever you place them, you'll find your ABF.
