Dried sea sponge as decoration?

We are setting up a new 55 gallon tank, and we have an old dried sea sponge that we thought would make an interesting decoration. Is this safe or is it a bad idea?

I would recommend rinsing it really well to make sure there is no residual salt. After that, put in in a bucket of water, change the water every day (squeezing out the sponge each time). Smell the sponge! If it stinks, then don't use it. If it doesn't have an odor and doesn't develop an odor after a few days of soaking, I think it should be ok for a FW tank.

If it's brittle, obviously don't squeeze it, but still do the soaks and water changes.
