Need advise on setting up new Hexagon freshwater aquarium
Hi...someone gave us a 33 Gallon 'tall' hexagon aquarium...w/ no equipment..can anyone please tell me what type of filter i need to buy (and where to buy it the cheapest)..i had a 55 gallon rectangle aquarium about 7 yrs ago...this is my 1st hex. one. Any other advise on what i would need would be great!! Thanx! :-P
Welcome to TFK. If you're using an HOB (hang on back) filter, most of the intake tubes are not long enough for the tall tanks and you ideally want the intake to be fairly close to the substrate.
I had a 45 gal. hex with an Aqua Clear 70 HOB filter because I was able to extend the intake tube with additional pieces and it worked really well. You can shop around online for these to get the best price or check out CL for any deals.
Good luck with your new tank and post some pics. when you get it set up.
I would definitely overfilter a tall hex tank. I only had 5 gallon hexes, but found that the filters didn't give enough circulation in the tank, and ran into cyanobacteria outbreaks. I ended up switching them all over to Aquaclear 20s. (rated for up to 20g) BG algae gone. I'd get a filter that is rated higher than your tank size, so that your circulation is good. You can't overfilter. Just my 2 cents.
