Settinbg up a 10 gallon planted tank for fry
I have a 10 gallon tank that I am thinking of setting up for fry. I have platy and long-fin danio fry that I am keeping in a breeder net at the moment.
I would like to set it up with natural plants (My 20 gallon high tank only has plastic plants) . Any pointers / links for plants and fry would be greatly appreciated.
I've just done the same thing in a 2 gal tank for some cory fry, which hatched in a breeder. Basically I've packed the tank with tons of plants inlcuding java moss, pygmy chain sword and pennywort. Small leaved plants like java moss are good as they provide places for micro-inverts to live which the fry can eat. The more plants the better really as they'll use the ammonia produced by the fry. I fertilise with Flourish comprehensive.
I only had a few days to set the tank up, whilst the eggs were developing. I used some sand and water from my main tank to make sure there were some cycling bacteria present. The plants and small bioload of the fry meant it didn't really need cycling.
Filtration is an air driven sponge filter. The lighting comes from indirect light from a window. The tank in on a chair, which I can move to crudely vary the amount of light the tank gets. A bit of ecesss light probably helps because it'll mean more algae and therefore more invert fry food.
My tank also has a lot of malaysian trumpet snails and pond snails, which are good because they'll clean up any excess food and algae.
I've only got 6 fry in there at the moment and have only really fed them every few days with some crushed fish pellets. They seem to be growing fine on whats living in the tank anyway
Thanks for the tips and sweet pics. Now I know exactly what to do !
I agree.. Jet Java moss for the foods and shelter, and floating stem plants like anarchis, guppy grass, and pennywort for ammonia usage.
Floating plants like frogbit are also good.
