Question about my tank cycle
I know this is a topic that is covered a lot, but I need some advice I haven't come across yet (It's probably out there, but I haven't seen it)
I am cycling a 10 gallon tank, but I started out a little different than others.
I had a sick fish (tail rot) that I needed to QT and didn't have a place for him, so I put him in a homedepot bucket with some rocks from his old tank as well as a heater, aerator and a filter. The filter was used in the past on a 10 gallon tank but hasn't been used in years. I took the charcoal and ammonia remover out of the filter and only left the sponge in. I checked his water everyday and did necessary water changes. He survived and was able to be put back in the big tank.
I took his water (about 4 gallons) and placed it in the 10 gallon tank. I added enough water to fill the tank. I have added some rocks from the big tank, an aerator, heater and put the charcoal and ammonia remover back in the filter.
My numbers have been stable for about 10 days: nitrAte: 5-10, Ammonia 0.5-1, nitrIte 0, pH 7.6, Temp 84 degrees.
So my question is, what do I do now?
I have not done any water changes. I have been adding food to keep the cycle going.
Sorry for the length of the post, but any help would be appreciated.
Tank should cycle in 4-6 weeks, relatively. You should do bi-weekly water changes. Try not to overfeed. Your numbers are alittle weird. Being that you have ammonia and no Nitrites. But your Nitrate levels are not that poor, those numbers will not harm your fish. The Ammonia will however, so those you do not want higher than what you see now. Water changes will knock these numbers down, and keep htem in line until the cycle is done.
Thanks Reefing Madness,
I think my tank is now good. I have zero Ammonia, zero Nitrites and 10 Nitrates.
This is just an isolation tank, so it should be ready to go.
Thanks for the answer. I appreciate the help,
