Help! Can Cichlids coexist with Rope Fish

Hi, I'am currently setting up a new 30 gallon tank that I'am planning to stock with Cichlids. I currently have a 5 gallon Hex tank that was housing my 10in. Rope/Reed fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus) that i transfered over to the 30 gallon tank for him to have more room. I have had mixed opinions from four different pet stores saying that it should be ok as long as theres enough hiding places for the Cichlids and the rope fish and some tell me that the Cichlids will kill it.

What kind and how many Cichlids could i stock the tank with that wouldn't kill my Rope fish? I would like to have a small Cichlid community.

My Tank Setup:
Penguin 330 Filter
AquaClear Powerhead 30
Medium size gravel
Driftwood, Fake and some real Floating plants

First, allow me to welcome you to Tropical Fish Keeping forum. Nice to have you with us.

I have no direct experience with this interesting fish, Erpetoichthys calabaricus, but from my research I understand it is relatively peaceful though it will eat smaller fish [any that will fit in its mouth]. It is rather shy aside from this, so any "bullying" fish or vigorous, boistrous fish do not sound like a good idea. The larger peaceful characins and peaceful medium catfish are possibilities.

Among cichlids, tilapia, angelfish and severum will work, provided the tank is large. A 30g is not sufficient for any of these, nor for the ropefish itself which will attain close to 3 feet. I hope you are planning on a larger tank soon, a 5-6 foot minimum.

Byron.

Thanks for the info. What about dwarf Cichlids though?

Like Apistogrammas or Pelvicachromis.
