How to propogate Nymphoides aquatica?
In the past few months, Ive made the switch to planted tanks for my betta fish. I own small tanks, only 5 gallons.
I stumbled across Nymphoides aquatica ("Banana plants") and really fell in love with them. They love my soft water, high light and good fertilization, though maybe they love me, back? Who knows, hah.
Ive researched how to propagate asexually, but am a little confused. I want to make sure what I do won't kill my cute little plants.
I've found I can cut 4in+(?) shoots, and after a few weeks, they will begin to grow roots, which can be planted. Is this true? Do they grow tubers like the original plant?
Ive heard I can cut off a tuber and shove it deep into the substrate, and it will grow also. If I were to do this, do I shove the cut or uncut end in the gravel? Again, would this grow into a plant similar to the original, or just a lilypad-like plant?
If there are any other methods or a correction to these methods, please let me know. I'm a bit confused.
5 gallon, planted, cycled
6500K/ for minimum of 5 hours/day, usually 10+ hours a day
Fairly loose, small, natural gravel substrate
Soft water, neutral pH
Fertilized with Aqueon's fertilizer, 6-7ml/5gallons, 1tsp magnesium sulfate every few weeks for a boost
Thanks. Here's are a picture of one of them, it doesnt do its size justice, but I cant get a good photo for some reason... The leaves are about 4+ inches tall.
i was told to never plant the tubers, the majority of the "bananas" should be above gravel was how i used to keep mine.. if you plant the bananas, they just rot.
Mine are above the gravel.
I've heard that you can weigh a leaf down at the substrate and it will sprout roots... I tried cutting leaves off of mine, and the leaf died...
I wouldn't cut any of the 'bananas' off...
