Cycling 55l tank with snails

i have 2 apple snails which have 1.5" diameter shells each. could i use these to cycle my tank?. They are amazingly hardy so im sure they would be ok but would it be effective. i could squeeze some of the filter sponge from my other 2 tanks too if that would help.

also how long would the cycle last roughly, so i know when to save up for the first batch of fish?

Cycling a tank can vary. The lower the bioload, the faster it will cycle, but you still need to be careful adding new fish because the tank will go through mini cycles adjusting to the new occupants. Plants help. I started a piece of driftwood in a tank with four shrimp and in under a week I was already getting nitrates and the nitrites were lowering.
