whats the best way to swap a filter?
I have a 20 litre tank (5 gallon) and it will be most likely a CRS tank. I have a "aquatopia internal filter 100" in at the moment, tank has been setup for 3 weeks and is cycled. I have decided I want more room in the tank so I ordered a mini cannister filter called a "Resun CY20 external 3in1" off the net for $17 bucks! What is the best way for me to swap the filters over? Do I set up the cannister filter and run it for a week with the internal still in the tank? Or squash the filter media from the internal into the new one or just swap it straight over?
Also, I currently have 4 cardinals in there. Will they eat my crystal red shrimp when I put them in? I had the cardinals in another tank with Cherries and they didnt eat the adults, They also bred and as far as I could tell I dont think they ate any baby cherries.
If it was me I would run both filters for a couple of weeks before you take out the current one you are using. That way it insures that the bacteria has formed in the new filter. I can't answer the second question. I have no experience or knowledge of those sorry.
I would run it for 4 weeks to be on the safe side so you have a good bacteria colony. I recently did the same thing when I went up to a larger tank, in the end I left my my smaller filter running along side the bigger one and the water is beautifully clear, so I think I'll leave them both there!
