Fish Filter making strange noise, dead fish

i have an aqua clear 40-70 gallon filter in my 55 gallon tank. i recently purchased the filter 2 days ago. i arrived home this afternoon to one of my fish being dead. Later on this evening as i was watching tv i suddenly heard an almost gargling sound coming from my filter. First i took it apart then i tried playing with the propeller and when i plugged it back in it didn't make the noise for a of couple minutes, then it started doing it again. there was nothing caught in the propeller or anything that looked out of the ordinary. What is going on with my filter? Could the death of my fish be related to this problem?

Is the filter sucking air? It can sometimes be difficult to position the intake to get a good enough seal to get proper flow through the filter. Not enough flow means less filtration and less circulation, which would be the only thing I can think of that could harm any of the fish...

The other thing to check on the filter is the pin in the impeller... if that is bent it will cause issues such as noise and improper function.

There is a better chance that loss of the fish is a coincidence. If you'd like to list your tank stats I'll do what I can to help you figure things out.

You mentioned this was a brand new filter. Do you still have the old filter running as well? If not, did you put any of the old filter media into the new filter? If you swapped out the filters and have all new media you may me going through a mini cycle. What are your ammonia and nitrite readings?
