Anyone know of a dark-colored brand of play sand?
I'm setting up some new tanks, and after the cost of the tanks themselves, plants, livestock, etc... I'm out of money! lol
I guess I'll go with play sand... Anyone know some good brands?
(I can get 'reef sand' substrate for .75 a pound right next to me but even thats too expensive. $4.00 per 50 pounds is much better!)
Ummmm not really but for that price the only places I can think of would be home depot, Lowes, or Walmart. I bought some from home depot for that price but it isn't that dark of a sand. It is not white more like a tan (It is in my dwarf puffer tank) I would have liked it to be a little bit darker but I need a bag for the same price range you are looking for.
The brand I used was quickrite think was the name of it? Not sure sorry
Sorry no, have you tried googling it?
They don't make a dark sand box sand, the reason..it's light so you can see the cat poop easier....
lol.. I might buy a little black sand to mix on top.
It is not "black" but the Quickrete playsand that HD and Lowe's seem to consider "tan" is to me dark gray underwater, and it replicates the sand in the Rio Negro. My photos make it seem lighter than it is, and you know how I feel about light substrates. The fish do look nice over this playsand, I have been very pleasantly pleased with the result. I much prefer it to the black I have in the 70g.
how big is your tank? 50lbs of sand is a lot... Are you doing an underlayer of soil? because if you do, thats even less sand to use...
I'm doing an underlayer of soil, but using a much different technique...
These tanks will have about an inch of soil and a total of two inches of sand, but it will be gradual instead of just two layers...
Bottom layer is 1/2 soil and 1/2 sand, then 2/3 sand 1/3 soil, and then at least an inch of sand on top of that..
Plus I'm doing 3 10 gallons, a 5 gallon standard, a 1 gallon bowl, and a 5 gallon hex... All started with dry start.
My show tank went anaerobic when I was gone for four days... (At least thats what I assume happened).
Most of the plants survived, all of the fish are fine, but my beautiful lawn of dwarf sag melted. (And yet, my crypt willisi are fine. Imagine that.)
I was considering the Quikrete all-purpose sand...
What do you think?
looks good. thats a lot of tanks to start at once, good luck!
