do LED lights work for a planted tank

do LED lights work for a planted tank?

I have a 36G medium planted tank. just wondering if LED lights work for freshwater plants, and if so, any recommendations?

thanks,
Ed

The first part of the answer yes. The second part of the answer the LEDs you actually need are very cost prohibitive and might have marginal energy savings at that. If your looking for over all savings and cost then stick with florescent, I even use household spiral CFL's in my tanks for that extra savings. Just make sure you get bulbs marked in the 6500k range of the spectrum.

Yes, they work well, running them on my newest setup. Make sure that the spectrum is right though, lots of LEDs are softwhite which does not reach the necessary spectrum for plants. I run 2 MR11 bulbs on my 6g and the plants are doing very well.
