Opinions on Malaysian Cone snail
I have a sand substrate and live plants. I hear that these malaysian cone snails may be good to keep sand from getting trapped with. . . something? :-?
I also see they breed like crazy and may be a bad thing. I'd like experiences, thoughts from others about having these little creatures.
The pet store would give me one, but I guess they're asexual and can still breed.
MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) will turn the sand for you, thereby eliminating any anaerobic "pockets" from forming in your sand. I keep MTS in my shrimp tanks, and I never have to bother with the sand, since the MTS take care of that for me. The shrimp tanks are heavily planted and MTS won't harm plants in the least. It did reach a point where there were so dang many MTS I added a couple of assasin snails, just to keep the numbers in check.
i started with 1, i now have at least 50 in my 46g tank. Kinda scary how they're all from one parent a couple of years ago O.o. They are great, ive added them to almost all of my tanks, but you should know that they will disturb plants and any new plants without deep roots may be pushed up when their population gets bigger.
I concur with what's been said. The benefits of these small snails are like the benefits of live plants--they simply cannot be understated. They are a real contributing factor to a healthy aquarium.
