New tank question

My fish tank came with a filter, its the walmart kit, can't remember which one, and a heater.

Couple questions.

Does heater placement matter? I have it in the middle of the tank now, should I put it at one end?

Does filter placment matter? I have in in the middle of the tank now, should I put it at one end?

Should I get an undergravel system to go with this tank? Will this be bad for real plants?

Thanks

Placement of the heater doesn't matter where, but it probably would be best near the filter input. Filter output placement should be opposite side of the tank than the input to allow for water to flow completely through the tank. You want to avoid "dead spots" where there is no water movement as this promotes anaerobic bacteria which will kill off the beneficial bacteria.

As far as a UG filter, I would avoid these unless you have a specific need. Due to their placement, they are somewhat troublesome to clean and are prone to clogging from the gravel. If you already have a filter, make sure it has a high enough flow rate to handle the fish you intend to house in the tank (4x tank size minimum for flow rate per hour, 10x is more desirable).

I put all my heaters by the outlet of my filters because that is where the best flow to the rest of the tank is.

Try to put your filter in an area that leaves the lest amount of dead spots as possible.

I wouldn't use under gravel filters at all...
